Women in the Military & Women Veterans
Capt. Pat Gormley, JAGC, USN (ret.)
Pat Gormley was a champion advocate for military women, working tirelessly for their advancement for more than forty years. She served for 24 years as a lawyer in the Marine Corps and the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the Navy including service in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. She was a faculty member at the Naval Justice School and held a variety of military justice, counsel, and civil law assignments in which she was usually the first woman to serve. For 10 years she was the military legal advisor to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS).
Following retirement from the Navy, Pat served in the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She then became director of the Women in the Military Project of the Women’s Research and Education Institute (WREI), and Research Coordinator for the Maine Commission on Gender, Justice and the Courts. She was appointed to membership on the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (1999-2001), where she chaired the Forces Development and Utilization Subcommittee. After working as the Director of Affirmative Action and Equity at the University of New Hampshire, she served as a United States Administrative Law Judge for the Social Security Administration. She also served as the Co-Chair of the Legal Redress Committee, and on the Executive Committee of the Seacoast [NH] Branch of the NAACP, and was a member of the New Hampshire Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. Pat most recently served as the President of the Alliance for National Defense, an organization that provides a positive voice for military women
Her military and civilian awards and honors include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Award; Arthur Fleming Award for Distinguished Public Service; Meritorious Service Medal (two awards); Expert Pistol Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Pat was married to the late Captain Matthew J. Gormley III, JAGC, USN [Ret], and is the mother of Kerry S. Gormley, and Sean B. Gormley, formerly Captain, US Army, who served in Iraq.
